Doc Martin Series

The Doc Martin TV Series is a British comedy drama starring Martin Clunes. Created by Dominic Minghella, it is filmed on location in and around the fishing village of Port Isaac, Cornwall, with filming of most interior scenes and production carried out in a converted barn at a local farm. A fourth series has been commissioned and began production in September 2008 with filming set to start in May 2009

Martin Clunes plays Portwenn's local GP, Martin Ellingham, who was once a successful London surgeon until he developed a phobia of blood that prevented him conducting operations. After retraining as a GP, he applied for a post in the sleepy Cornish hamlet of Portwenn, where he spent childhood holidays.

Much of the show's humour revolves around Martin Ellingham's interaction with the local Cornish villagers. Despite his surgical brilliance, Ellingham lacks vital personal skills and any semblance of a bedside manner, and often fails to understand other people. Dr Ellingham (referred to as "Doc Martin" by the friendly locals), much to his disgust, finds the surgery is in disarray.

As the village's new doctor steps into the village he is encountered by a dog who seems to become besotted with him, following him into his house, car, surgery and even in his bed throughout both Series 1 and 2. Despite Doc Martin's bitterness towards the dog, he ends up reluctantly liking it, after giving up with the villagers thinking Doc Martin is its owner.

The community is united in horror at their miseryguts of a new GP. Doc Martin soon finds he needs all the allies he can get as he tries to negotiate his way around village life with humorous consequences.

Martin Clunes is joined by a cast which includes Stephanie Cole as his Aunt Joan, who provides him with emotional support in the face of the disquiet among the villagers. Caroline Catz plays feisty primary school teacher Louisa Glasson. Doc Martin is attracted to her, but he is hopeless at personal relationships.

Martin Clunes' character was originated as Dr. Martin Bamford in the 2000 film Saving Grace. He then appears in two "prequel" television films made by BSkyB, Doc Martin and Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie, in which viewers learn that Bamford, a successful obstetrician, finds that his wife has been carrying on extramarital affairs behind his back with his three best friends. After confronting her with the news, he decides to leave London and heads for Cornwall, which he remembers fondly from his youth. Shortly after he arrives, he gets involved in the mystery of the "Jellymaker" and, following the departure of the village's resident GP, decides to stay in Port Isaac and fill the gap himself.

Although the original deal was to produce two television films per year for three years, Sky Pictures folded after the first two were made, so Clunes' company tried selling the franchise to ITV who generally liked it, but felt the character of Martin Bamford needed a little something more to him than just being a "townie" who is a little out of his depth in the country. ITV wanted something a little more edgy, so Martin Clunes came up with the idea of the doctor being unusually grumpy. In the process, the doctor's last name was changed from Bamford to Ellingham, an anagram of the last name of new writer Dominic Minghella who was brought in to re-work the Doc's backstory and create a new village of supporting characters.

Quite often during the series there are references to people being "a bit Bodmin". This is a reference to the fact that Bodmin was once the centre of mental health care for the South West, and was based at the former St Lawrence's Hospital site and now at Bodmin Hospital.

A Clark Gable Bio

The man known as Clark Gable was born as William Clark Gable back on February 1st of 1901. Since a boy, he was known as Gabe by his friends while growing up in Cadiz, Ohio. Throughout his lifetime, he was married 5 times with his first two ending in divorce, the next two his wife died shortly afterwards and the fifth survived him.

When Clark was only 7 years old, his mother passed away which led him to a rough childhood. By the ripe age of 16, he left school to look for employment and found a job at a tire factory. He had many different jobs before becoming an actor that included working in the oil fields as well as selling stocks and even men's ties.

It was when he was only 24 years old when Josephine Dillon would meet Clark and help him get to Hollywood. Josephine was the manager of a Portland, Oregon theater and also would later become Clark Gable's first wife. It was the play, "The Bird of Paradise" that had inspired him and soon would lead him on the path to stardom.

Lionel Barrymore who at the time was a famous actor actually made the recommendation to MGM Studio's Irving Thalberg to get Clark a screen test. This test did not go so well mostly because Irving did not like his looks. However, latter on in 1931 he would land the co-acting role in the movie Dance, Fools, Dance with Joan Crawford.

The following year he would land the role in Red Dust where the public fell in love with him. Everyone felt the chemistry he created on-screen. Clark began to grow in popularity and when MGM asked him to play a role he did not want to, as a punishment then sent him to Columbia Pictures to work for a while. This of course was MGM's mistake as the Columbia film It Happened One Night got Clark Gable an Oscar.

MGM did not like this one bit and called Clark Gable back to work where he played in the films, Mutiny on the Bounty as well as Gone with the Wind. He would leave Hollywood for three years after shooting Gone with the Wind because his third wife along with her mother had died in a plane accident and he would even join up with the Army Corps to play his part in the Second World War.

Upon returning, he attempted a comeback appearance in the film Adventure but this did not turn out so well. MGM felt he was being paid too much and cancelled his contract.

He would make other films, however most of these would go unnoticed until the 1961 movie Misfits. Before the film's release and the birth of his first son, Clark Gable would die of a heart attack.

This grass could be sown in the spring following planting and once it was established it would be kept mown regularly, the grass clippings being allowed to return to the ground naturally.

Minnesota fruit is very large and brightly coloured. A strong grower. Season mid. Perfection is an excellent cropper with long bunches, large heavy berries, bush tends to spread. Season mid. Rainy Castle is medium bunches of medium-sized red fruits. Has now been largely superseded by better varieties. Some people swear by it for cordons. Season mid-late.

Red Lake is quite popular because it is an upright, moderately vigorous grower. It is a heavy regular cropper with brightly coloured berries. Season mid. Rivers' Late Red is included because it is the best late red. A rather spreading bush with fairly long bunches of bright red fruit. Season late. Wilson's Long Bunch is a medium-sized fruits being borne on long bunches, as its name suggests. Quite a strong upright grower. Season late.

White Dutch is a heavy cropper, shortish bunches bearing large, whitish-yellow berries. Bush somewhat spreading. Season late. White Grape is a very similar to White Dutch and appears to be synonymous. White Trasparent is sometimes called White Pearl. A heavy cropper with largish berries. Season mid. White Versailles is a variety bearing long bunches of large sweet berries. The growth is medium, stiff and upright. Quite a heavy cropper. Season early.

I had not perceived regarding the idea that the bread world was far too extensive and more complicated than what I have thought bread to be.

So, I had chanced upon this druidish fair when my nose picked up the sweet scent of freshly baked bread. My guess would have had to be oats or barley added to the dough. You could smell the grains popping from the heat of the brick oven. And lo, was I right!

There is this annual bread festival somewhere up north. It was a rare occasion (it was an annual event, around Spring when the ground smelled of fresh mud) and the people dressed up like Quakers. But they had so much flour and wheat going around. And when you have too much flour, the next logical thing to do would be to make bread out of it. They had allowed outsiders to their festival, and it was joy for me. You could rarely experience the sight of bread being made, baked in a brick oven and immediately allowed for tasting when it has cooled down a bit.

I got a hold of an herby bread immediately. I could smell the pepper, the dill, and cinnamon from inside my mouth. Cleared up my sinuses too. That bread packed a punch. Needless to say, it did not escape me, as I had devoured the whole thing with much gusto. The couple just gave me an amused look, and I had the courtesy to turn red. It was a funny experience.

They had meat pies too, though not the same as we city-folks have it. It's still inside the whole bread, so you really get a full meal. And there was lots of different types. I really did not venture trying each and every bread, but I went for the safest I could think of: turkey. So there I sat and ate. The turkey seemed...wild. Or something, I really can't tell. Probably wild, since I never had wild turkey before. If the thing in the groceries count anyway. Others took to pork or mutton.

Many demographers have linked Spain's very low fertility rate to the country's lack of any real family planning policy. Spain is the Western European country that spends the least on family support (0.5% of GDP). A graphic illustration of the enormous social gulf between Spain and the other countries of Europe in this field is the fact that a Spanish family would need to have 57 children to enjoy the same financial support as a family with 3 children in Luxembourg.

In emigration/immigration terms and after centuries of net emigration, Spain has recently experienced large-scale immigration for the first time in modern history. According to the Spanish government, there were 4,145,000 foreign residents in Spain in January 2007. Of these, well over half a million were Moroccan while the Ecuadorians figure was around half a million as well. Romanian and Colombian populations amounted to around 300,000 each. There are also a significant number of British (274,000 as of 2006) and German (133,588) citizens, mainly in Alicante, Mlaga provinces, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands. Chinese in Spain are estimated to number between 10 to 60,000, and South East Asian groups such as Filipinos -whose country was a former Spanish possession- created a small community in Spain. Immigrants from several sub-Saharan African countries have also settled in Spain as contract workers, although they represent only 4.08% of all the foreign residents in the country.

During the early twenty first century, the average year-on-year demographic growth set a new record with its 2003 peak variation of 2.1%, doubling the previous record reached back in the 1960s when a mean year on year growth of 1% was experienced. This trend is far from being reversed at the present moment and, in 2005 alone, the immigrant population of Spain increased by 700 000 people.

Spain currently has the second highest immigration rates within the EU, just after Cyprus, and the second highest absolute net migration in the World (after the USA). This can be explained by a number of reasons including its geographical position, the porosity of its borders, the large size of its submerged economy and the strength of the agricultural and construction sectors which demand more low cost labour than can be offered by the national workforce. In fact, booming Spain was Europe's largest absorber of migrants from 2002 to 2007, with its immigrant population more than doubling as 2.5 million people arrived.

Immigrants from the European Union make up a growing proportion of immigrants in Spain. They mainly come from countries like Romania, the United Kingdom, and Germany, but the British case is of especial relevance due to its magnitude. The British authorities estimate that the real population of UK and Canadian citizens who move to Spain from Canada or are living in Spain is much bigger than Spanish official figures suggest, establishing them at about 1,000,000, about 800,000 being permanent residents.

Blueberry is a native of North America which is now grown in some parts of Great Britain. The type which is popular is known as High Bush. This does best in an acid soil where the water table is 20-30 inches below the surface.

If the plants are properly grown and there is plenty of sunshine, the mother plant may be producing fruit in June and later the stolons which can be trained up posts or wires to 6 feet and more will be bearing fruit in August, September and even October.

King's acre berry is a hybrid raised by crossing the blackberry and raspberry. It is picked earlier than the loganberry and the fruit comes away from the core easily, like a raspberry. It is like a long-shaped blackberry of excellent flavour. The canes are sturdy and bear heavy crops of fruit. Plant 8 feet apart.

Of course, the climbing part of the plant is only annual and has to be cut down in November. The plants, are then fed well in order to encourage new runners to be produced which will climb.

Veitchberry is a cross between the November Abundance raspberry and the blackberry. The berries are very much like a large ripe mulberry, being twice as large as an ordinary blackberry. The fruit is picked just before the blackberries are ripe, it being sweet and deliciously flavoured. The canes are quite attractive in the winter, being reddish purple in colour. Plant 8 feet apart.

It affects all three essentials: food, water and air. Garlic Festival

Somehow, I sense a trend that we'd all have an all-out spice festival in the future. It's more like an inside humor, but I had come across a little festival in the state of Connecticut called the Garlic and Harvest festival. One thing's for sure, you won't find much vampires lurking around here, as it's all garlic, garlic and garlic!

The garlic festival celebrates what else but garlic! And what a lot of garlic they are celebrating! Garlic dips, garlic spreads, garlic cheese and garlic oils, all sold at special garlic food shops. They have fresh garlic and cured garlic; garlic sold by the bundles and garlic sold by the bulbs. It's flooding garlic plus a whole bundle of other fall produce that the town harvests during this season.

And it's not just about garlic in its raw form. They also have garlic sausage with onions and pepper, garlic steak sandwiches, garlic pork sandwiches, deep fried garlic (!) and even garlic ice cream! Talk about a garlicky buffet.

The festival has demos like How to Grow Garlic and some cooking demos too. It's not really all about garlic, as they also do with some herbs and spices (how to grow them). A music band is also available in the afternoon. Just make sure that you have a high resistance for the stuff, it's quite potent and leaves a lot of naysayers in tears.

It's quite a small festival, so I really can't say it's worth a trip from quite a distance. Perhaps if you do live in Connecticut or in states around it, then I suggest you come and enjoy. Perhaps more music and more entertainment would also help, and a bit of variety in the shops and in the food served. After all, there are people who will be dragged into this but would rather not deal with garlic.

Pruning Gooseberries

Use old well-rotted farmyard manure at a similar rate, but really old manure is so difficult to get these days that I usually discount it. It is important not to use too much nitrogen because one doesn't want to encourage the rapid growth of young shoots.

On the other hand, there still are special districts in East Sussex, like Newick and Chailey, where dessert gooseberries are grown in large quantities. Curiously enough, they pack their fruits in green bracken and these special packs are recognized in the London markets.

The rest of the bud will be found on the soil round about as a rule. If the compost garden is large enough, then there may not be so much trouble-as there isn't on our land at Thaxted. But where the garden is small the birds will come from areas round about, especially when there is a late fall of snow.

Pruning should therefore be delayed as late in the winter as possible because this makes it more difficult for the birds to get about among the bushes, while it may be necessary to interweave black cotton among the branches to keep these normal feathered friends away. In the case of the gooseberry varieties that are grown to produce berries for cooking, the pruning can be reduced considerably. Here, after four years of age, when the goblet-shaped branches have been formed, one need only carry out a certain amount of trimming so that picking can easily be done.

I start by cutting back the branches that are drooping to the ground, for it is from the soil that the mildew spores blow. Then he cuts out any wood that may be filling up the centre of the bush and so keeping out the light and air. And lastly, branches are thinned here and there as necessary with the aim of making picking easy to carry out in the summer. It must be remembered, of course, that by that time further young growths have developed. So although the branches may look a little sparse in the late winter after pruning, the bush soon 'fills up' in the spring and early summer.

In light soil this could be forked into the ground or rotor tilled into the ground before planting, but with heavy land it is better to apply the compost as a top dressing in a large circle around the bushes after planting.

Another official website also offers the same kind of information. They also have live webcams, so you can see the skiers on the mountain slopes, but no blog offerings. (As an aside, this particular site is in frames, which I find very limiting.)

Alpine Strawberries

There are many varieties of strawberries. Below are a few choice varieties of compost growing of strawberries that gardener usually plant.

They can be planted in rows 18 inches apart, leaving a foot between the plants. The fruits, of course, are small and the propagation can be done by splitting up the clumps after fruiting has finished in the late autumn. Fifty plants are ample for a normal family. This is a strawberry which. will grow on a partially shaded border which has been enriched with plenty of fine old compost or, if preferred, sedge peat. It is possible to raise plants from seed or to buy them from nurserymen early in September. Pick off the first few flowers that appear and the plants will then. crop heavily from August to October, when the ordinary varieties are over.

Cambridge Sentry is included because it is a variety which is resistant to Root Rots and mildew. Is a good type for bottling, canning and jam-making. It has dark green foliage and tallish, upright stems. The trusses are held well off the ground until ripening takes place. The fruits are firm and of a glossy crimson colour. Season mid.

Cambridge Vigor is a good variety for a frost pocket because the blossom trusses develop late Resistant to Red Core, botrytis and mildew. Excellent for canning, deep freezing and jam- making. Fruit is conical and glossy crimson. Season early.

Merton Princess is a variety raised by the John Tunes Research Institution which is resistant to Verticillium Wilt but unfortunately liable to Botrytis. Is very useful for a country district where it crops heavily and produces large, crimson fruits. It is very susceptible to Red Core. The blossoms are well protected from frost by the leaves. Season mid-early. Red Gauntlet is a variety raised by the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute. A vigorous compact grower, the large trusses of which stand clear of the foliage. The fruits also are very large and scarlet in colour. Flavour good. Season mid.

Royal Sovereign may be compared to the Cox's Orange of apples. Very delicious when well grown. Good for the heavier type of soil. The fruits are scarlet, very large and of excellent quality. Rather too leafy for growing under ganwicks or cloches. A lovely variety for the small garden. Season mid. Cambridge Rival is a grand variety for the wetter parts of Great Britain and in rainy seasons. Produces short trusses, plus foliage that is on long stems clear of the fruit. Is a good variety for sandy soils which may be low in potash, and the flavour of the berries is improved under ganwicks or frames. Is very resistant to the Red Core Root Rot. Fruits are large, conical, firm and crimson. They do not however travel well. Season early.

Nicklaus

Jack William Nicklaus, well known as "The Golden Bear," was born on January 21, 1940 and may well be, as his fans will tell you, among the greatest pro golfers ever. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, a pharmacist's son, he was a student in Upper Arlington High School and beat a mild case of polio as a youth. Turning to golf at ten years old and shooting an amazing 51 for nine holes, he broke 70 at age 13 on eighteen holes.

As a junior player he won the Ohio Open in 1956 at sixteen years of age, the US Amateur twice (1959 and 1961), and an NCAA Championship in 1961. When Nicklaus played in the 1960 US Open he had a 282 and finished second behind golf great Arnold Palmer. He was also a part of and won the US Eisenhower Trophy with his team in 1960 with a four-round score of 269-this record still stands today.

By 1962, Nicklaus was playing professionally, winning the US Open for the first time. His defeat of Arnold Palmer gave his immediate fame - he went on to win the Masters Tournament twice before the 1960s came to a close; although he would not win another US Open championship until 1970. The 1970s saw Nicklaus taking 9 other major titles, breaking Bobby Jones' 13 title record. In 1986, Jack Nicklaus played and won his last major tournament, his 18th - and at 46, becoming the oldest player to do so.

Joining the Senior PGA Tour in 1990, by 1996 he had an impressive ten wins, eight of them being that tour's majors. He made his last appearances at The Open Championship and the Master Tourney in 2005. Golf wasn't the only thing on Jack's mind and he has been involved in golf course design, writing, and organizing and holding his own tourney on the PGA Tour, The Memorial Tournament. His golf course design company is one of the largest in the world and his writing skills range from instructional to autobiographical to titles on how to play golf-his way.

Like his long-time rival Arnold Palmer, Nicklaus came to prominence as golf was beginning to be a televised sport. He quickly became one of the highest paid players, earning a then unheard of $60,000 in 1962; a year he would also win Rookie of the Year. 1963 was an even better year for Palmer as he captured the PGA and Masters championships.

In 1964, he won the British Open at St. Andrews and established a new record for lowest score in the last thirty-six holes-66-68. His Masters win in 1965 set a tourney record of 271-which stood until Tiger Woods shot 270 in 1997. In the 1968, The Golden Bear let his physical condition slip, which most felt affected his playing skills, but Jack improved in the fall of 1969 where he returned to top form. Sadly, he lost one of his biggest supporters and mentors, his father, Charlie Nicklaus in 1970.

Interviewed in 1970 after the death of his father, Nicklaus said: "I was playing good golf, but it really wasn't that big a deal to me one way or the other. And then my father passed away and I sort of realized he had certainly lived his life through my golf game. I really hadn't probably given him the best of that. So I sort of got myself back to work. So 1970 was an emotional one for me from that standpoint-it was a big boost." Whatever the reason Nicklaus was certainly a record setter - he was the first player to win all four major tournaments twice in the course of his career.

In 1974, the PGA Player of the Year was given to Nicklaus for the third time and he was among the first to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. In 1975, he won his fifth Masters and his fourth PGA Championship. ABC named him Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year. Again, at the top of the money list in 1976, he played what he liked to call, "hang-back-and-hope golf." In 1986, he won his sixth Masters-again and unbelievably was still going strong. His 1978 British Open win gave him a place in golf history where he won each major championship three times-a record finally tied by Tiger Woods in 2008. His Senior Tour wins include The Tradition (four times), the Senior Players Championship, and the US Senior Open. Along with his 100th career win (The Tradition) in 1996, he and his four sons and son-in-law had 299 courses open in 2005, an impressive 1% of all the courses in the world. Jack Nicklaus is The Golden Bear for record breaking, his playing style, and his off-the-course achievements and will remain one of golf's greatest players of all time.

My life took a sharp turn lately. With the debilitating financial crisis well underway, I have found myself without a job. Fortunately, I have several things going for me: I have a car that I completely own, a house that I've inherited, and I have a part-time business that I share with my girlfriend.

My girlfriend and I have been selling her crafts at various craft fairs for a couple of years now. Back then, it represented partial income that we are able to invest together, but at this point, we've decided to use it for the time being for our everyday use. All in all, the cheapness of the materials used to make her handcrafted jewelry means that people will continue to buy from us despite the thrifty attitude most of us are adopting.
